Welcome to Spring Break 2024 Cabin Style! This was just the beginning. The start of our journey, I hope you enjoy our remodel as we move along and make progress!

Getting this started

So Spring Break 2024 this year looked a bit different for us but in such a wonderful way. Not only have we had some amazing family time but we made some major strides this week on this little cabin we purchased in April of last year. So don’t knock our picture just yet, this is the original selling picture that was posted last February in 2023. This picture wasn’t exactly my selling point but I loved it just the same. My husband at the time might have begged to differ. He randomly is like “I still can’t believe we bought this place.” But it’s coming along nicely! Those pictures are to come shortly!

In 1950 this cabin was built with much love and work, it shows after all it is still standing lol. It included a little over 3 acres of land that had been left overgrown for the previous ten years. Growth of trees although not massive was a lot to conquer in itself. Outside tree and yard work, hauling off junk and cleaning has honestly taken us this long to get to the point we are now, where we are no longer hauling off but adding to our own.

a picture is worth a thousand words

Now this picture, this picture was my selling point. This little cabin tucked away on Big Cherry Lake was such a mystery looking through but not really beyond the gate. Although you can’t see the gate as it is standing open in the picture it is so intriguing to what lies past in when you can’t see it from the main road. Will I tell you anything about our journey has been easy? Absolutely not. Has it been amazing? Yes!

From trying to get paperwork signed to cutting trees and hauling off ten years worth of an entire cabin left behind was just the beginning. Fixing ceilings and cracks and floors, water, the back porch, painting, washing, cutting and burning brush and well if you can think of it, we have probably done it. Its been slow to this point but this week has left us with a new desire to fix up something that was built with love before. I say a second chance for a beautiful cabin in the pines.

You will just see the pictures now of where we started when we bought it, but once I keep updating and posting on our cabin remodel you will see the efforts and hard work that is paying off now. This land is special, and our little family is bringing new laughter and love to what was overgrown and quiet.

What we love- Oh yes love!

A tire swing now resides in the front yard along with a rope swing from the past. Honestly our son loves it as much as his own tire swing. Cars line the driveway on any given day that we are there and the back porch is the perfect family time for grilling and enjoying the view. Catching salamanders at the lake and fishing well let’s just say those are definitely added bonus points.

We love the snow when its a big one, we love the sound of the rain on the tin roof, we love watching our boy play in the mountains. We love all of our neighbors and the friends we have made being here, we love the fresh mountain air after a long week at work. Maybe I should title this, What we don’t love but then I wouldn’t have much to write about.

Winter has been slower and quieter in the mountain but it’s still been every bit of amazing to me. Now I prefer 80 and sunny but when it comes to the mountains you kind of have to love it all.

cabin with a view

This view is worth the purchase, but even more amazing now. Clearing a few trees had made a drastic difference for this. Being able to walk to the lake is also something that I know our son is going to love even more as he grows. Hiking the walking trail with friends around the lake and back to the cabin has been something I have grown to love. Those unexpected “gems ” of the mountain, well they are there and you don’t have to look too hard to find them.

So Spring Break 2024 we have nicely redone the side porch and added new, framed all front walls, framed the clawfoot tub, moved the water to center in the kitchen window, replaced flooring and put drylok paint on the walls for a moisture barrier, fixed the structural center of the back porch and built a concrete pad beside the porch for our propane tanks! Thankfully we had this week, we needed it and then some!

This little piece of heaven can be for you too! Spring is here and life is coming alive on the mountain. Green beginning to trek up the mountainside and butterfly’s flying by in the light breeze are just a few wonders of these southern mountains. These mountains have always been my home and now they are a little sweeter. Hope you enjoyed the beginning of this journey!

final thoughts on spring break 2024

This year has brought me a great many things some good and some very bad. Some happy and some sad. There is a time to everything under the sun but I hope that no matter the circumstance that you love and embrace, that you heal and laugh, speak and dance. Walk or better yet run after life. It is a short ride enjoy it and don’t take it for granted!

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;

A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.
